About the Bar Exam
The Alabama Bar Exam is a two-day exam. It takes place on the last Tuesday and Wednesday of February and July. The MEE®(Multistate Essay Examination) and MPT® (Multistate Performance Test) take place on Tuesday and the MBE®(Multistate Bar Exam) takes place on Wednesday.

Bar Exam Format
The Alabama Bar Exam is a two-day exam.
- Day 1: AM: Two Multistate Performance Tests (MPT®s) PM: Six Multistate Essay Exam (MEE®) essays.
- Day 2: 200-question, multiple-choice Multistate Bar Exam (MBE®).
Subjects Tested
Business Associations (Agency and Partnership; Corporations and Limited Liability Companies), Civil Procedure, Conflict of Laws, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence, Family Law, Real Property, Torts, Trusts and Estates (Decedents' Estates; Trusts and Future Interests), and Uniform Commercial Code (Secured Transactions).
Bar Exam Dates
- 2024: July 30-31,
- 2025: February 25-26, and July 29-30
Grading
The Alabama Bar Exam requires a minimum scaled combined score of 260 points out of 400 points to pass. The MBE®is weighted at 50% of the score, the Essays are weighted at 30%, and the MPT®exams are weighted at 20%.
MPRE®
A minimum passing scaled score is 75 or higher.
MPRE® Policy: the acceptable MPRE® score may not be earned more than 25 months prior to or following a passed Alabama Bar Examination.
Reciprocity
Alabama permits admission on motion, without examination, for applicants who have practiced for five of the preceding six years, are admitted to practice and are a member in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction, have received a J.D. or L.L.B. from an ABA-approved law school, and have not taken and failed the Alabama bar within the 10 years prior to their application. As of 2014, an applicant who sat for the UBE®in another jurisdiction may transfer the score earned on that examination to Alabama in lieu of taking the UBE®in Alabama. An applicant must transfer the score to Alabama and receive certification of the Committee on Character & Fitness within twenty-five (25) months of the date of administration of the UBE®in which the score was earned. The candidate must have also received a minimum score of 75 on the MPRE®.
Other Requirements
An applicant for admission in Alabama must also take and complete the Course on Alabama Law. Before being admitted to the practice of law in Alabama, all applicants shall complete a course on Alabama law, the content and delivery of which shall be determined by the Board of Bar Examiners.
